Over centuries, 詹 simplified: its top became 丷 (like ‘eight’), its middle condensed to 彡 (three strokes suggesting careful detail), and its bottom stabilized as 亼 (a variant of 今). By the regular script era, the right side had crystallized into today’s 詹-like shape — still echoing watchful, deliberate presence, now harmonized with the heart.
This evolution mirrors its semantic journey: from ‘attentive observation’ (詹) + ‘heart’ → ‘heart that observes itself calmly’ → ‘inner tranquility born of mindful awareness’. In the *Huainanzi* (2nd c.
