菩萨

菩萨 (pú sà) is a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism, referring to an enlightened being who, out of compassion, delays their own final nirvana to help all sentient beings achieve liberation. In English, it is translated as 'Bodhisattva' (from Sanskrit 'bodhisattva'). Unlike an 'arhat' (a person who has attained nirvana for themselves), a Bodhisattva actively works for the enlightenment of others, embodying the ideal of selfless service and universal compassion.

The word 菩萨 is a phonetic transliteration of the Sanskrit 'bodhisattva', and its two characters are chosen for their sounds rather than their semantic meaning. However, each character has its own meaning: 菩 (pú) can mean 'broad' or 'universal', and 萨 (sà) often relates to 'savior' or 'helping' (as in 菩萨, the 'enlightened savior'). In Buddhist texts, the character 菩 is also associated with 'bodhi' (enlightenment), and 萨 is a common short form for 'sattva' (being). Thus, the characters collectively evoke the idea of a 'universal enlightening being'.

In Chinese culture, 菩萨 is not only a religious concept but also a symbol of compassion and mercy. The most beloved Bodhisattva is Guanyin (观音菩萨), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, often depicted as a female figure in Chinese art. People commonly pray to 菩萨 for help, protection, and guidance in daily life, even outside strict Buddhist practice. The phrase '菩萨心肠' (pú sà xīn cháng) literally means 'a Bodhisattva's heart', used to describe someone who is extremely kind and benevolent. In everyday speech, you might hear people exclaim '菩萨保佑' (pú sà bǎo yòu) meaning 'Bodhisattva bless us', expressing hope for good fortune or safety.
