同志 (tóng zhì) is a term traditionally used to address someone who shares the same ideals, goals, or beliefs, often in a political or social context. It is most commonly translated as 'comrade' and was historically used within the Chinese Communist Party to refer to fellow members. In modern usage, it can also be a respectful way to address someone in a group setting, though its use has become less common.
The character 同 (tóng) means 'same' or 'together,' while 志 (zhì) means 'aspiration,' 'purpose,' or 'will.' Together, they imply a shared purpose or ideology, reflecting the original political connotation of the term.
While once widely used in official and political contexts, the term has gradually fallen out of everyday use in favor of more general terms like 先生 (xiānsheng, 'Mr.') or 女士 (nǚshì, 'Mrs.'). However, it remains an important historical and cultural term, especially in discussions about China's political history and revolutionary movements.
