文化
How to Understand
文化 (wén huà) refers to the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation or people. It encompasses both tangible elements like traditions and artifacts, as well as intangible aspects like values and beliefs. Unlike 'civilization,' which often implies a more advanced stage of development, 'culture' is broader and more inclusive.
The character 文 (wén) originally meant 'marks' or 'symbols,' later evolving to mean 'literature' or 'culture.' 化 (huà) means 'to transform' or 'to cultivate.' Together, they suggest the process of shaping and refining society through shared knowledge and practices.
文化 is commonly used in contexts such as cultural heritage, cultural exchange, and cultural identity. In China, it plays a central role in national pride and international relations. Understanding 文化 helps learners grasp deeper meanings in Chinese texts and conversations about tradition, education, and social norms.
