唯物主义
How to Understand
Materialism is a philosophical concept that asserts that all things are composed of matter and that all phenomena, including mental states, result from material interactions. It contrasts with idealism, which emphasizes the mind or spirit as the fundamental reality.
The character 唯 (wéi) means 'only' or 'solely,' 物 (wù) means 'matter' or 'physical substance,' 主 (zhǔ) means 'master' or 'principle,' and 义 (yì) means 'righteousness' or 'principle.' Together, they form a term that emphasizes the primacy of material reality over abstract ideas.
Materialism is commonly discussed in academic and political contexts in China. It is often associated with Marxist philosophy, which views material conditions as the foundation of social and historical development. Understanding this term helps learners grasp key ideological distinctions in Chinese thought and discourse.
