义和团 (yì hé tuán) refers to the Boxer Rebellion, a peasant movement in China during the late 19th century that opposed foreign influence and Christian missionary activities. It is distinct from other historical movements due to its anti-foreign and anti-Christian stance.
The character 义 (yì) means 'righteousness' or 'justice,' 和 (hé) means 'harmony' or 'peace,' and 团 (tuán) means 'group' or 'organization.' Together, they suggest a righteous group seeking harmony, though the term later became associated with the violent uprising against foreign powers.
Historically, 义和团 was a significant event that led to international intervention and the eventual fall of the Qing Dynasty. Today, it is studied as a key moment in modern Chinese history, often discussed in the context of national sovereignty and resistance to foreign domination.
