The Xiongnu were a nomadic confederation that existed in northern China from around the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century CE. They were known for their military strength and frequent conflicts with the Han Dynasty.
The character 匈 (xiōng) means 'chest' or 'front,' while 奴 (nú) means 'slave' or 'servant.' Together, the term may have originally meant something like 'barbarian slaves' or 'enemy people,' reflecting the Han Chinese perspective of them as non-Han outsiders.
The Xiongnu played a significant role in early Chinese history and are often mentioned in historical texts and modern discussions about ancient Central Asia. Understanding the Xiongnu helps learners grasp historical narratives and cultural interactions between Chinese dynasties and nomadic groups.
