桲

In a rural village in northern China, you might see an elderly farmer using a 桲 (bó) to thresh wheat. This simple wooden tool, a flail, consists of a long handle and a shorter stick connected by a chain or leather strap. Swinging it rhythmically, the farmer beats the wheat stalks to separate the grain. The character 桲 combines the radical 木 (wood) with 孛 (bó, a phonetic component), reflecting its wooden construction. Though modern machinery has largely replaced it, the 桲 remains a symbol of traditional agricultural life in China.
