总统 (zǒng tǒng) refers to the head of state or government in a republic, typically elected by the people. It is commonly used in countries with a presidential system, such as the United States, and can also refer to the leader of a nation in a more general sense.
The character 总 (zǒng) means 'overall' or 'general,' while 统 (tǒng) means 'unified' or 'centralized.' Together, they convey the idea of a leader who unifies and governs a country, reflecting the role of a president as the central figure in leadership.
President is widely used in political contexts, especially in news reports and official documents. In China, the term is not used for the head of state, which is referred to as 国家主席 (guójiā zhǔxí). Understanding this distinction helps avoid confusion when discussing different political systems.
