进士 is a historical term referring to the highest degree in the imperial examination system of China. It denotes someone who passed the most rigorous and prestigious exam, which was the final step in the civil service selection process during the Tang and Song dynasties.
The character 进 (jìn) means 'to advance' or 'to proceed,' while 士 (shì) refers to a scholar or gentleman. Together, they signify a scholar who has advanced to the highest level of academic achievement, reflecting both intellectual and moral superiority.
