大学士
How to Understand
大学士 refers to a high-ranking official in ancient China, typically serving as a senior advisor or minister in the imperial court. It was a title given to scholars who had passed the highest level of civil service examinations and were entrusted with significant administrative and advisory roles.
The character 大 (dà) means 'great' or 'large,' 学 (xué) means 'study' or 'learning,' and 士 (shì) refers to a scholar or gentleman. Together, they convey the idea of a learned and respected official, emphasizing both intellectual achievement and social status.
大学士 was commonly used during the Ming and Qing dynasties, often holding positions such as Grand Secretary. Today, the term is mostly historical, but it remains an important part of Chinese cultural and political history, often appearing in literature, films, and historical discussions.
