节度使 (jié dù shǐ) refers to a high-ranking military official in ancient China, particularly during the Tang and Song dynasties. This position combined both military and administrative powers, making it one of the most influential roles in imperial governance.
The character 节 (jié) originally meant 'baton' or 'staff,' symbolizing authority. 度 (dù) means 'measure' or 'regulation,' while 使 (shǐ) means 'envoy' or 'agent.' Together, the term implies an official who was entrusted with overseeing regional defense and governance.
Historically, 节度使 played a crucial role in maintaining order in frontier regions. However, their growing power sometimes led to rebellions, such as the An Lushan Rebellion. Today, the term is mainly used in historical contexts, especially in discussions about Chinese political structures and military history.
