锦衣卫 (jǐn yī wèi) refers to a special elite military force during the Ming Dynasty, responsible for protecting the emperor and enforcing imperial authority. Unlike regular soldiers, they were directly under the emperor's command and had significant power.
The word is composed of three characters: 锦 (jǐn), meaning 'brocade' or 'luxurious fabric'; 衣 (yī), meaning 'clothes'; and 卫 (wèi), meaning 'guard' or 'protection.' Together, the term literally means 'brocade guards,' reflecting their prestigious status and elaborate uniforms.
锦衣卫 was known for its strict discipline and role in maintaining imperial order. They often acted as both soldiers and secret police, making them a powerful and feared institution. Today, the term is used historically and in media to describe this unique aspect of Chinese imperial history.
