Its structure shows 十 (ten, but here acting as a simplifying phonetic or structural marker) above 匕 (bǐ, an ancient variant of 'spoon' or 'ladle', later repurposed as a component). Early dictionaries like the Shuōwén Jiězì (121 CE) classify 卑 under the 十 radical and define it as 'low in position; humble', confirming its semantic core was status-related from the start.

The character’s eight-stroke form stabilized by the late Han, shedding earlier variants with extra dots or altered components. Notably, 卑 never functioned as a pictograph of physical lowness (like 低 dī, which literally depicts 'lowering'); instead, it encoded social hierarchy—a concept deeply embedded in Zhou and Confucian thought. Its phonetic element is debated, but scholars agree it coalesced as a phono-semantic compound where 匕 may hint at pronunciation (bēi resembles bǐ in Old Chinese), while 十 anchors the written frame.

By the Tang and Song dynasties, 卑 had solidified its dual connotation: objectively 'low in rank or status' and subjectively 'humble, modest'. It appears in classical texts like the Book of Rites (Lǐjì) advising rulers to 'avoid arrogance and embrace the卑 (bēi) path'—meaning humility as virtue. Crucially, 卑 never meant 'despicable' on its own; that negative valence only emerges in compounds like 卑鄙 (bēibǐ, 'despicable'), where 鄙 adds the moral judgment.
